The Nobel Prize in Chemistry belongs to two Americans

Two American scientists won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year for finding proteins that help the body's cells respond to signals from the outside.

Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka are the names of two Americans who won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the AP reported.

'Two researchers Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka have made a breakthrough when they discovered the receptor group associated with G protein, the name of an important receptor group,' said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Receptors associated with G proteins (or seven-segment helical receptors, solid-winding receptors) are a large protein family that includes bio-membrane receptors capable of sensing molecules outside the cell. After detecting the molecule outside the cell, the receptor stimulates signaling processes to produce the proper response for the cell. Thanks to that mechanism, they help the body detect changes in the internal and external environment.

About half of the world's pharmaceuticals interact with the seven-segment spiral receptor. So studying them will help scientists find more effective drugs.

Dr. Lefkowitz is working at Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Maryland, while Dr. Kobilka is a researcher at Stanford University.
