Breaking a mirror is also breaking the soul into pieces. Seriously damaged souls cannot protect its owner from unlucky things. In another explanation, the damaged soul seeks revenge on the person who caused his injury. Revenge may be different, often losing a close friend or causing the death of a family member.

The idea that broken mirrors bring so many misfortunes can come from the ancient Greeks. They believe souls live in reflective lakes. In Greek mythology, Narcissus is a hunter famous for his handsome appearance. He was the son of the river god Cephissus and the goddess Liriope. Once Narcissus saw his reflection in the water and fell in love with himself. Therefore, he suffered himself into the river suicide due to his love never being returned.

Regardless of where and when, the concept of breaking a mirror will encounter unfortunate occurrences that are common in many world cultures, including from Greece and China to India and the United States. However, there is no evidence that this concept has a scientific basis.
