SS Mantola sank in 1917 during World War I, after being torpedoed by a German submarine U-81.

Odyssey Marine (USA) has found the ship off the southwest coast of the Republic of Ireland, at a depth of 2,500m under the North Atlantic Ocean.

Two weeks ago, the Odyssey company also discovered the wreck of another ship under the Atlantic, Gairsoppa, carrying 200 tons of silver, worth $ 230 million. This is the most valuable 'batch' of metal ever found under the sea.

During a recent expedition to find the Gairsoppa, the Odyssey discovered the Mantola. Estimated, Mantola carries about 20 tons of silver, worth over $ 19 million.

The steamship hung the British flag, 137m long, departing from London on February 4, 1917 to depart for Calcutta, India. The ship carried 165 sailors and 18 passengers and many goods.

Mantola was sunk torpedoed by German ship U-81 on February 8, 1917. Most of the people on board survived, except for the seven people killed by the overturned lifeboat.

An attempt to tow Mantola ashore but failed, before it sank on February 9, 1917, less than a year after being launched.

The body of the Mantola was discovered in international waters, about 160km from the location of the Gairsoppa wreck.

Under the agreement with the British Ministry of Transportation, the Odyssey company will be entitled to 80% of the silver on the found ships. An expedition to salvage the two ships is expected to take place next year.
