The story of Poyais Kingdom - A hero's deceitful scam

Drawing a beautiful perspective called Poyais, the scammer made many people fall into death. He was arrested, but then emerged as a hero.

From the promised land .

On a beautiful day in October 1822, Gregor MacGregor - a young man in Glengyle, Scotland, announced something that surprised everyone. He said he was not the son of a normal banker, but Cazique - the prince of the kingdom of Poyais, a land lying along Honduras.

Poyais - as described by MacGregor.

As far as he described, his land was slightly larger than Wales and so fertile, that it could grow up to three corn crops a year. The water here is pure and fresh, which can wash away every thirst.

And not enough, there is a golden block in the riverbed! The trees are fruitful, the forests are full of great hunting animals.

MacGregor drew a flashy future like paradise in his land, in stark contrast to the gloomy reality and barren land of Scotland at the time.

According to MacGregor, Poyais is located along Honduras.

However, the Poyais kingdom lacks one thing: investors and settlers are ready to leverage Poyais further. At that time, investment in Central and South America was becoming very popular, and Poyais appeared as an attractive offer.

Anyway, Scotland does not have its own colony, maybe this is the opportunity?

. to the harsh reality

When immigrants arrived in San Josef, it was impossible to describe their anger when they found out where it was supposed to be a prosperous town with nearly 2,000 residents - as MacGregor said - there were only a few. Old tattered tent.

The immigrant group had to make clean the mahogany trees on the sandy ground, repair each hut to cope with the weather. Their reserve food had been wet most of the time when the boat docked. During the day, the sun is super hot, and the night is extremely cold with heavy rains. The ground is all sandy, and the sand is so hot that the turtle eggs laid out are also urged to bloom soon.

The money was thought out by MacGregor, and of course not used.

The harsh climate here quickly affected everyone, and illness began to appear. With brackish water and no fresh water, people began to die slowly.

Twenty people died within half a month, all of them sick. Many people choose death instead of suffering. Symptoms are especially bad for women, and they gradually become desperate.

Helie, a shoemaker chosen to "shoe the princess of the Poyais kingdom" committed suicide on the hammock she was lying on, just because of the illness.

Nearly 250 people came to the "promised land" and broke out that they were cheated. Two-thirds of them died, the rest were rescued. A series of warnings are sent to boats not to a kingdom that does not exist.

MacGregor, however, remained calm and confident. He also wanted to trick more investors and settlers in France, with the same way in England. But unfortunately for him, the French were curious. An investigation was opened and MacGregor immediately fell into labor.

But, with a mischievous name like MacGregor, escaping is no sooner or later. And MacGregor escaped.

. become Venezuela's hero

The most interesting thing is here. MacGregor was acquitted in the next trial. In fact, there are many survivors who protect and assume that this is not his fault. During the trial, MacGregor was acquitted, and instead, a fellow accomplice took on every crime.

And if you don't know, MacGregor was a soldier. Afraid that previous creditors will follow up for a lifetime, MacGregor arrives in Venezuela and participates in the war for its independence. Later, MacGregor was welcomed as a hero when he fought in that war.
