The strange Indian ritual allows people and scorpions to play together
Most people don't dare touch a live scorpion, but in a small village in India, people can put poisonous spiders, scorpions on their faces without worrying at all.
Every year on Naga Panchami , when most Indians worship the cobra god, the Kandakoor is 20km from Yadgir, Karnataka state to worship Scorpion (scorpion). Men, women, children, and elderly people will all line up to go to a nearby hill called Chellina Betta, the place to worship the statue of Kondammai god .
People will wear saree, their traditional costumes, bring coconut and oil to sacrifice, pray for health, peace, prosperity. After the ceremony is over, they will start searching for scorpions to play with.
True to its name, Scorpion Hill is home to a large number of scorpions. One particular thing is that these scorpions appear extremely dense on Naga Panchami. On normal days, they appear very little and are difficult to find. However, on this great holiday, they crawled out a lot, so people could easily catch and play with them. This may seem unbelievable but in 2016, an Indian article reported on this strange thing.
People catch scorpions, hold them in their hands without showing any signs of fear. They will then let them crawl on their hands, feet and face. The most emotional person will put them inside the mouth, they believe that if they do so, Kondammai will protect them.
The spectacle of shooting in Kandakoor is not widely distributed, there are very few people who know this scorpion worship ceremony. So this year the media appearance attracted a large number of interested people. The followers grew and many curious people also came to this place to admire this strange custom.
Up to this point, this ritual does not happen any casualties, everyone feels very happy playing with scorpions. In daily life, people here also show great respect for this reptile.
Today, in addition to the Kandakoor, the scorpion temple has now added thousands of followers from neighboring states such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to worship and join.
