Explaining the phenomenon, scientists led by Susann Bruche of the Royal College of London studied AND of 8 male lions and 7 females in the zoo.

The results show that these lions are genetically different from all other lions living today.

The animals in the zoo are the last lions with thick manes and black. Their wild populations were thought to be extinct due to excessive hunting. But recently, there have been several reports of seeing similar lions in Ethiopia's eastern and northeastern regions.

Now researchers are planning a field survey to verify the reports and take measures to preserve the lion species.
