The surgery is bizarre: Remove the uterus from the mother, inflate it for surgery for the fetus
The fetal uterus is removed from the womb, inflated and illuminated like a balloon for surgeons to correct spinal errors for the fetus 24 weeks.
The unique new technique of Dr. Michael Belford (Baylor College of Medicine University, Texas - USA) surprised the scientific community when published in the recent Obstetrics and Gynecology magazine.
The mother's womb was temporarily taken, pumped, illuminated, while doctors used an endoscope to anesthetize and operate the baby inside - (Photo provided by the research team).
With a few hours of surgery, the doctor "reborn" the babies that were recommended to be removed, otherwise they would be born with hydrocephalus and many severe deformities. After that, most of the patients were born smoothly in a normal delivery, perfectly healthy, with no trace of the complex types of malformations they had.
Speaking on the New York Times, Ms. Lexi Royer (28, a hairdresser), recounted that she was asked to terminate an abortion when diagnosing prenatal spina bifida.

Spina bifida has an incidence of approximately 24,000 babies. A defect occurs because the spinal cord and spinal cord do not develop properly, causing amniotic fluid to enter. The baby was born with hydrocephalus, unable to control his bladder, unable to walk on his own, even having to eat and breathe through the tube for life.
Instead of deciding abortion as the doctor recommends, Royer decided to risk the first experimental operation by Dr. Michael Belford. In the unique images that the research team provided, Royer's fetal uterus was temporarily removed from the body through the abdominal incision in the 24th week of pregnancy.
It was pumped like a CO 2 balloon, then the doctor used anesthesia device and operated the baby inside through two very small holes.
After the operation, the uterus and the baby are brought back into the womb. And the baby was born like no birth defects or complications. Of the 28 patients who have had surgery so far, only a few need to be drained of some stagnant fluid in the brain but then all of them are healthy.
Dr. Michael Belford and colleagues practiced this technique for 2 years before proceeding on humans. Their initial experiment was . a rubber ball containing a doll wrapped in chicken skin; then the pregnant sheep.

Surgery is controversial that whether the CO2 pump is really safe. Dr. Michael Belford said he and his colleagues are continuing to research to improve the technique.
