More than 700 people have explored the wreck of the Titanic since it was found in 1985.

The purpose of the Underwater Cultural Protection Convention, launched in 2001, is to prevent unscientific or unethical exploration.

UNESCO announced that more than 700 people had dived into the wrecked location of Titanic - about 4km from the Canadian coast.

Irina Bokova, general director of UNESCO, remarked that the sinking of the Titanic was an event deep into human memory. So protecting the Titanic body, where more than 1,500 people are killed, is important.

'Thousands of other wrecks also need to be protected. We do not accept the act of plundering cultural heritage on the ground and will not tolerate acts of depriving our underwater cultural heritage , 'added Bokova.

The 2001 Underwater Heritage Protection Convention only protects submarines more than a century ago. Titanic - built in Belfast, England - sank on the first trip after departing from the port of Southampton to New York City, USA. It hit an iceberg near Canada's Newfoundland Island.
