Carbyne is a chain of carbon atoms bonded together in an alternate manner between single bonds and triple bonds. This structure is different from thin sheets of graphene atoms.
UPI researchers at Rice University say the new material is more elastic than any previously known material and could double that of graphene.
In fact, scientists have found the existence of Carbyne as a hypothesis in the 19th century, which later found them in the dust between stars. So far, small quantities of Carbyne can be produced experimentally.
