There will be the world's largest marine reserve in Antarctica

The project to establish a protected area was agreed on October 28 in Australia, within the framework of the annual meeting of the Antarctic Marine Conservation Commission (CCAMLR).

This is a project initiated by the US and New Zealand. Under the project, the reserve is located in the Ross Sea area in Antarctica, stretching to 1.55 million km 2 , of which 1.12 million km2 is a no-fishing zone.

Murray McCully, the New Zealand Foreign Minister, said the project began to be discussed in 2012 and had to have some changes to be approved by all CCAMLR members. However, the final agreement balances the factors: marine environmental protection, sustainable fishing and scientific research benefits.

The Antarctic Sea occupies 15% of the world's oceans, the world's most biodiverse, is home to more than 10,000 species of creatures, including those found only in these waters.

According to scientists, the establishment of the reserve will also help to understand the impact of climate change.

CCAMLR members include 24 countries and the European Union (EU). The decisions of this Committee are only valid when agreed by all members.

Also at the meeting, another project initiated by France and Australia was also discussed, but was not adopted because there was no time for the meeting. It is a conservation project involving a sea area of about 1 million square kilometers in the East of Antarctica.
