The glowing tree is also called Starlight Avatar . To create this glowing plant, the researchers transplanted genes from bioluminescent bacteria into the chloroplast genome of Nicotiana alata, a relative of home grown tobacco plants.

According to the team, this plant will glow blue when placed in the darkness. The plants will glow throughout the life cycle, about two to three months. Because it is created by its own method, the ability to glow cannot be transmitted from tree to tree by pollination.

The initial development goal of this plant is to provide light to the rooms in the evening, contributing to reducing the need for electricity. Popsi said, when it developed the ability to light up strongly and put it into application in the future, glowing plants would be a source of stable light in the streets of the city. This is considered a solution to reduce dependence on fossil fuel sources or electricity.

Starlight Avatar has been researched and developed since 2010. Until now, researchers have successfully tested 20 glowing plants. These trees will be auctioned in the near future.
