Two weeks in the water

Lloyd Godson, an Australian biologist, lived 13 days at the bottom of a lake in a yellow steel box for stamina testing.

Godson used a solar panel system and a foot-pedal generator to generate electricity and charge the computer, as well as keep a garden absorbing carbon dioxide and providing oxygen.

'Feeling the sun shining on my face and the cool breeze here is great,' he told journalists after coming out of a 3-meter box that was sunk into a lake in Albury, Australia.

Godson had to recycle his own urine and waste, but a group of divers provided food and drinking water, including fruits, nuts and tomato and cheese mixes. For entertainment, Godson watches videos via laptops and uses wireless Internet to communicate with students around the world.

Lloyd Godson was sponsored by Australian Geographic magazine for this experiment. The project is designed to provide data on practical issues and psychological pressure of living in a different environment. Godson was also remotely tested by a psychologist in his underwater experiment.

Godson said the information could help in future planning for longer missions of submarines or spacecraft.
