Use nanofibers to make armor

Unlike ordinary foam, nanofibers are specially designed to be used not only for the manufacture of armor, but also for protecting buildings when an explosion occurs.

A team at the University of California, San Diego led by Professor Yu Qiao created the foam by mixing the substances together at the molecular level, then removing one of the materials by Acid etching or burning to create tiny holes in the remaining material.

However, the size of these small holes is very important. Observations show that, when normal foams are subjected to sudden, high-intensity impacts, this resource is absorbed into a region and can lead to structural breakdown. As long as the foam holes are small enough (but not too small), the resources will be dispersed harmlessly over a wider area.

The structure of the nanoparticle is 50 to 80 percent small, the size of each hole is 10 nanometers to 10 microns. Different levels of nanoparticles are tested in laboratories with gas guns that produce dramatic effects. They then used a scanning electron microscope to measure the extent of damage.

During the study, nano-sized nanoparticles showed the best ability to absorb impact and explosive pressures.
