The strange water hole is part of a hydroelectric dam system built in 1955. It has the function of leading water from the Naves river to Lagoa Comprida lake, via a 1,519-meter tunnel. Mosses grow around the crater made of concrete and granite, giving it a natural beauty.

Tourists often visit the water hole through a walking trail in the Serra de Estrela mountains. Due to the remote location, many people do not even know about the existence of this beautiful landscape.
