The footage, shot earlier this week in the area near Kuchino-erabu island, in Kagoshima Prefecture, showed that the fish flew for 45 seconds and occasionally slapped its tail on the water to keep it high.

The film team said they had filmed this unique image while making a documentary about the natural world.

Scientific documents show that there are more than 50 species of 'flying' fish belonging to the family of Exocoetidae, living in warm waters in the world. They could 'fly' out of the water to avoid the pursuing enemies below, and spread out their long pectoral fins to glide in the air.

Normally this fish only 'flies' for a few seconds, then returns to the water. However, in the footage of NHK filmmakers, the fish flew 45 seconds, using both the caudal fin.

Earlier, in 1928, a captain said he had seen a fish fly over the water for 42 seconds in Florida. According to NHK, 45 seconds can be the longest time a flying fish can fly above water.
