Vietnam: The tsunami risk is very high

International geophysicists warn of the high risk of tsunamis on the coast of Vietnam and therefore Vietnam needs to build a tsunami warning system soon.

Professor Kerry of the Center for Tectonic Observations - California Institute of Technology (USA), said the global positioning system from satellites has found a major fault line in the ground - the cause of the strong earthquake 9 , 2 richter and led to a terrible tsunami on December 26, 2004.

Professor Kerry warns, there is a huge tension in the fault zone. The explosion of this pressure can be released to cause a new fault in the near future.

Vietnam and Thailand are also located in the transitional region of Indochina to the East. If an earthquake occurs, it is possible to cause tsunamis at the boundary between the Philippine array and the Asian array. That will greatly affect the coast of Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Dr. Vu Thanh Ca, Director of the Center for New Technology Application and Research, Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology said: ' It cannot be caught off guard with the risk of tsunami '. Vietnam has recorded stories about Vietnam's coastal disaster in the past 100 years.

After the earthquake caused tsunamis in the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004, killing more than 200,000 people, hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes and material losses amounted to tens of billions of US dollars. Asia is very interested in building a tsunami warning system.

At the special meeting of ASEAN leaders discussing overcoming the consequences of the earthquake and tsunami in Jakarta (Indonesia) in early 2005, Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai also actively mentioned to soon build a god alert system in the Indian Ocean region.

However, many scientists believe that, in the current conditions of Vietnam, to make a tsunami warning is not easy.

Currently, Vietnam has only 6 monitoring stations in the coastal area and no monitoring system at sea as well as a warning system for earthquakes and tsunamis. Vietnam has not participated in the Pacific tsunami warning network.
