Warning of cancer risk when using Elidel and Protopic

Two types of eczema cream will now have to bear the big word warning about the risk of skin cancer, ulympho and other cancers, according to US producers and regulators on January 19.

These two creams, Elidel of Novartis AG and Protopic of Astellas Pharma, will be sold with a warning 'black spot' - the strongest warning used in the US - ten months after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its first warning call.

The FDA said while a clear link between these drugs and the risk of cancer has not been found, there have been enough cancer reports that warrant this change. A total of 78 cases were reported for both types of products until October 2005.

In addition, the label also includes changes that state that both drugs should be used only after trying other drugs. The label also states that these two creams should not be used by children under the age of two.
