Why are some parts of the body reborn and others not?

Scientists have long tried to answer this question, and so far we know why.

What is a cell?

As you know, our body consists of many cells made up. At times we call cells 'bricks of life'. All parts of the body are made of cells that come together.

Have you ever played Lego? So imagine the cells are like Lego pieces. Like Lego pieces, cells can be combined into blocks of different shapes and colors. Cells can also do many different things.

Your skin is also made up of many different cells, some skin cells make hair, hair, some other skin cells make scars when you are injured, for example.

Even blood is made up of different cells. Red blood cells make your blood red.

Now, back to the question of why some parts of the body can regrow (regenerate) and others if lost cannot be reborn. Some cells in our bodies are special because they can multiply. Not only that, these special cells can even turn into other cells. These special cells are called 'stem cells' and they are the key for the internal organs to be able to regenerate.

What parts can regenerate themselves?

In this article, we use the word 'rebirth' to describe the phenomenon of a part of the body that can heal itself after an injury or illness.

The skin is a part that needs regular regeneration. Skin stem cells produce new skin cells as old skin cells die.

Another part is that the liver also regenerates very easily. Liver cells are called hepatic parenchyma cells . These cells start multiplying when the liver is damaged. So we can see that liver parenchymal cells act like stem cells.

The intestine is also a part that can regenerate itself. Even when we are healthy, the intestinal cells are constantly multiplying, because the intestinal cells lose during digestion of food so the stem cells in the gut must multiply to have new cells replaced.

Which parts are difficult to regenerate?

For example, when the brain is damaged, it is difficult for brain cells to multiply new cells. That's because the brain has very few special cells, that is, few stem cells.

In recent years, we have discovered some areas in the brain that can regenerate, but we still need more research to better understand this.

We still don't know whether young people's brains are better regenerated than old people.
