Professor Eli Sprecher of the Department of Pharmacy at Tel Aviv University (Israel) and Tel Aviv Sourasky Pharmacy Center and colleagues have compared the genes of those who are ill and not sick to determine where genetic changes are located.

They discovered a version of the SMARCAD1 gene that specifically affects the development of fingerprints. The results of this study are published in the American Journal of Human Genetics . Now scientists continue to study how this gene affects fingerprint formation.

Just like DNA, each person's fingerprints are unique so it is a valuable tool for detecting crime in international travel. They are used for identification because they form fully after 24 weeks of conception and remain unchanged throughout life.
