Will map DNA of 1000 people

Any two people will have 99% homologous genomes. But the remaining 1% difference is the "tantalizing" scientists, and now they plan to map the DNA of 1,000 people around the world to test that genetic diversity.

The international project announced yesterday, is a collaboration between the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the UK, the National Institutes of Health and the Shenzhen Gene Institute in Beijing, China.

So far, the Human Genome Project is the first project to provide a map of about 25,000 human genes in 2003. It is based on a blend of DNA from different people. Since then, only the number of people counting on the fingertips has been decoded DNA.

The new project will use donated DNA by a much larger number of volunteers.
