5 common diseases that people need to know

Dengue fever, hand, foot and mouth disease are outbreaks in many parts of the country.

According to the report of the Preventive Medicine Department, Ministry of Health, at the meeting of Steering Committee for Disease Prevention and Control (September 14), from the beginning of the year until now, our country has circulated many dangerous epidemics.

Dengue

From the beginning of the year to September 13, the whole country recorded 124,986 cases of dengue fever, 29 deaths. The number of hospital admissions was 105,304. Compared to the same period in 2016 (73,158 / 19), the number of hospitalizations increased by 43.9%, the number of deaths increased by 10 cases.

Currently, the Northern region still has 662 active outbreaks. This is also the only region in the country circulating all 4 serotypes. In particular, Hanoi is the city with the highest number of deaths (7 people).

Disease caused by Zika virus

Accumulated from the beginning of the year, the country recorded 31 cases in 8 provinces and cities out of 702 samples. The locality with the highest number of people infected is Ho Chi Minh City (18 people).

Zika is an infectious virus through the bite of Aedes mosquito, the type of mosquito that causes dengue fever. The death has not been recorded and can be resolved after 7-10 days.

According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Grant, Central Hospital of Tropical Diseases, the incubation period is about 2-12 days after being bitten by mosquitoes.

Signs of Zika virus identification:

  1. A mild fever of 37.8-38.5 degrees C, fatigue, rash on the skin, pain in small joints in the hands and feet.
  2. Conjunctivitis, muscular pain, headache, eye pain, and weakness.
  3. A small number of patients may have abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, mucous ulcers or itching.

HFMD

Manifestations of hand, foot and mouth disease are water balloons of 2-10mm size, children may have mild fever, harassment due to mouth pain, stop eating .

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 62,055 cases in 63 provinces and cities, including 28,020 cases of hospitalization, no deaths.

Compared to the same period in 2016, the number of hospital admissions increased 9.2%. The cumulative number of cumulative diseases is concentrated in some provinces and cities in the South such as Dong Nai (the incidence rate per 100,000 people is 226), Ho Chi Minh City (210), Ba Ria Vung Tau (183), Dong Thap ( 154) and Binh Duong (148).

Dr. Truong Huu Khanh, Head of Infection - Neurology, Children's Hospital 1 (Ho Chi Minh City), recommends that parents need to detect the disease early to bring it to the hospital in time. Manifestations of hand, foot and mouth disease are water balloons of 2-10mm size, children may have mild fever, harassment due to mouth pain, stop eating .

Most water balls collapse and free themselves after 5-7 days. However, the disease can cause some dangerous complications for cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological conditions such as encephalitis, myocarditis, meningitis.

Children with brain complications often show signs of trouble sleeping, continuous crying, panic, babbling, shaking hands and twitching. Complications caused by hand and foot and mouth disease if not treated properly and promptly can cause death in a few hours.

Pig streptococcal disease

The whole country recorded 142 cases of pig streptococcal disease in humans, of which 101 cases were diagnosed to be confirmed laboratories, 12 deaths.

Pig streptococcus is a possible bacterium in the pharynx, throat, skin, gastrointestinal and reproductive tract of some healthy pigs, more common in sick pigs (in case of blue ear disease).

Habits of eating broth or un-cooked dishes such as heart and boiled colon can cause people to eat pig streptococcus, especially in areas where resistance is reduced, such as alcoholics, cirrhosis, and diabetes.

According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Cap, Central Hospital of Tropical Diseases, symptoms of pig streptococcus are high fever, lethargy perceptions, lethargy, hypotension shock, and necrotic lesions in the skin. The disease is very fast, blood infection, multi-organ failure, if not timely emergency, the risk of death is very large.

Rabies

Since the beginning of the year, the country has 56 deaths from rabies, occurring in 29 provinces and cities, typically Bac Giang (6), Nghe An (5), Thanh Hoa (5) and Son La ( 4). Compared to the same period in 2016, the number of deaths is equivalent (56/56).

This is acute viral encephalitis caused by viruses, transmitted from animals to humans primarily through bites of infected animals.

The clinical manifestations of rabies in humans are water fear, wind fear, seizures, paralysis and death. When rabies is present, the mortality rate is almost 100% (for both humans and animals). However, rabies in humans can prevent and treat prophylaxis with vaccines and rabies-resistant serum.
