Tetanus is an acute infection caused by bacteria, the toxin of this bacterium Clostridium tetani has a very high mortality rate, especially dangerous for pregnant women and babies (95% of babies death of tetanus).

Tetanus bacteria are everywhere in the soil and sand;animal and poultry manure;sewer .

Here, tetanus bacteria easily penetrate open wounds even if only minor scratches. They develop in anaerobic conditions (bruised wounds are dirty, no air, bandages are wound .). Then, it will enter the body, enter the nervous system and cause muscle spasms or twitching when stimulated, very dangerous.

Therefore, all pregnant women need to be vaccinated to prevent tetanus for both mother and baby already in the regulation issued by the Ministry of Health of Vietnam.

When do pregnant women get tetanus vaccination?

As recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), all women of childbearing age (pregnant or not pregnant) need to be vaccinated against tetanus to create antibodies to help both mother and baby. Births are protected in the event of an invasion of tetanus.

Tetanus vaccination for pregnant women with 2 basic nose:

Nose 1: Inject at the earliest when pregnant for the first time or women of childbearing age.

Nose 2: At least 1 month from nose 1 and at least 1 month before birth.

Notes when tetanus vaccination with pregnant mother

Do not administer for severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) after the previous injection or any component of the vaccine. Injection may be delayed in cases of previous reactions or neurological disorders after vaccination, fever, acute infection or progression of chronic disease.

After injection in the injection area, there may be pain, swelling, heat at the injection site, dizziness, and mild fever.

In some cases, pregnant mothers need to consult their doctor before being vaccinated against tetanus such as arthritis, kidney, flu, multiple pregnancies or at risk of preterm birth .
