Add a security risk in Sony's CD
Sony BMG Music Entertainment and the Electronic Frontier Foundation copyright group have announced the discovery of a new security risk in Sony's CD products.
The new risk relates to the integrated copy protection version for Sony CDs created by SunnComm Technologies. The software is activated automatically when the CD is inserted into the computer. This security flaw can help hackers gain control of the computer and run malware on the system.
The security issue affected many of Sony's CD types in addition to the 4.7 million units it recalled last month.
The cause of the problem lies in the anti-piracy CD technology developed by First 4 Internet (UK). Sony has used this technology for a wide variety of its CD types, thus taking advantage of the vulnerability in copy protection technology to help hackers infiltrate a large number of computers in the past.
The fix for this vulnerability has been published by Sony and posted on its website.
