America: The central region is submerged in a snowstorm

A violent snowstorm swept across central America on the first day of the year, killing at least 10 people and tens of thousands of households losing electricity.

On January 1, 2007, rescuers continued to deploy a campaign to search for cars that could be drowned in a snowstorm. According to initial records, 10 people were killed in snow-storm traffic accidents in the states of Colorado, Texas and Minnesota. Earlier, in the end of 2006, a tornado killed two people in Texas and Kansas.

Although snow no longer falls, at least 50,000 households and companies must go through a year without electricity. Many roads in Colorado state are covered in thick snow . Scott Blair, of the National Meteorological Agency, said it was a very strong snowstorm when the western Kansas area was sunk in 80 cm of snow, creating so many 4.5 meter thick pile of snow. Local authorities must use airplanes to search for vehicles engulfed in snow. According to the local power company, it takes a week to fully restore the grid to areas hit by snowstorms.
