Americans are 'weaker' than other developed nations

A recent report by the National Research Council and the American Institute of Pharmacy shows that Americans are very sick and die earlier than residents of other high-income countries.

The chief executive of this report, Steven H. Woolf, said: 'We are really shocked by this result. Americans have higher morbidity and mortality rates than other high-income countries. What concerns us is why the US is lagging behind so many decades? '

This is the first detailed report of American illness, casualties and behavior compared to 16 other developed countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan and many other Western European countries. When compared in terms of infant mortality, low birth weight, injury and death, adolescent pregnancy status, sexually transmitted infections, infection rates AIDS and HIV, the number of opium-related, obesity and diabetes-related deaths, heart disease, chronic lung disease and the proportion of people with disabilities, the US are always or almost 'record'.

Americans have higher rates of obesity than other rich countries.

The US has a higher rate of infant mortality than any developed country. They have a premature birth rate and children live under 5 years of age. Adults in the US are 'easy to die' by accidents and murders. The United States is also the country with the highest proportion of teenage pregnancies, so it is also the country with the highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases among the countries participating in the study.

'This is really a tragedy , ' Mr. Woolf said.

According to reporters, the main reason is that in the US, social values and social policies are being overlooked. For example, Americans are still "indifferent" to be engaged when they have unhealthy behaviors such as eating a lot, or taking part in activities that "play around" with their lives. In addition, the gap between the rich and the poor is huge, while the education of young people is overlooked.

'Research data is necessary but we should act instead of waiting for such information , ' Woolf said.
