Ancient rodents weigh a ton

The world's largest rodent lived about three million years ago, about the size of a buffalo and weighs a ton.

The Telegraph said on February 4 that Josephoartigasia monesi had relatives close to the pacarana rodents. As described by scientists at York University, England, they are about the size of a buffalo and weigh about a ton, striking with long and large teeth.

In the study, the team used computer simulation to determine the strength of the bite of this species. Accordingly, they estimated a bite of Josephoartigasia with 1,400 N (Newton) force, equivalent to a tiger's jaw.

"We conclude that Josephoartigasia must have used front teeth in many activities other than biting, such as digging for food, or defending against enemies. This is similar to how elephants today use. use their ivory , " said scientist Philip Cox.
