Anti-drowsy system for the driver
Greek researchers are developing an intelligent system that can monitor the driver's alertness, detect signs of drowsy drivers and awaken them.
Evangelos Bekiaris, research director of the IMET Institute, will complete the system in early 2008 and put it into operation at car manufacturers in the next five years.
The system is equipped with a camcorder and nano sensors can assess the driver's alert level and issue a warning if they fall into dangerous or disturbed sleepiness, thereby ensuring safety for the person. especially for those who have been drinking or are tired.
(Photo: TTO) Studies and statistics show that drowsiness increases the risk of accidents occur 3-4 times and is the cause of 15-20% of the total accidents. They also detect the driver's response at 2-3 seconds before the accident is very important. With early warning, drivers can respond promptly and minimize the risk of accidents.
' Inside the car will attach small cameras, can evaluate the level of movement of the eyelid driver. Whereas the sensors mounted on the steering wheel, the seat and the hood will measure the pressure of the hand on the steering wheel; assess the direction and position of the vehicle on the road; the position of the car relative to the other vehicles around as well as the movement of the head and the driver's body , 'the scientists explained.
The system can then use algorithms to calculate these limits whether they meet safety requirements. If not, it will alert the driver by emitting an audible or visual signal in the vehicle glass, even 'whistling ' to wake up the driver.
