Avian flu appears in Togo

For the first time, bird flu has appeared in Togo. Information was confirmed by officials after independent tests in Italy. Recently, thousands of poultry have been found dead in this West African country, most of them occurred in the past week at a ranch in Sigbehoue, 45 km east of Lome capital.

"Test results from the Padua lab say the number of birds died from the H5N1 virus," Agriculture Minister Yves Nagou Mado said. He also said the Ministry of Agriculture has taken many measures to prevent this virus from spreading to other poultry flocks, including killing and destroying infected poultry.

Before that, there have been no cases of bird flu detected in Togo, which has banned the import of live poultry and poultry products from countries affected by the disease since October last year.

To date, there are 191 people worldwide out of 313 people who have been infected with bird flu virus.

FAO: Avian influenza is still a serious threat

On June 27, speaking to reporters on the conference of experts discussing the prevention of H5N1 virus, Joseph Domenech, Director of the Animal Health Division of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned despite the work. Global outbreaks of bird flu have improved significantly over the past few years, but the H5N1 virus remains persistent in some countries and will continue to spread.

According to Domenech, in the past six months, the H5N1 virus has been detected in about 15 countries in Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, but these outbreaks were quickly destroyed or controlled. Most affected countries publicly announce the epidemic situation. This proves that the world now has serious awareness in dealing with avian influenza virus.Countries have been better prepared and have significantly improved their disease prevention system.

However, it is necessary to avoid psychological satisfaction, to improve vigilance, strengthen international cooperation and improve hygiene conditions, especially in markets, because it does not eliminate the risk of flu Poultry spread to humans as long as the flu virus persists in poultry.Recent outbreaks of H5N1 in Bangladesh, Ghana, Togo, the Czech Republic and Germany are clear warnings that H5N1 is spreading to countries that have never been affected by the disease, or have had a previous epidemic.
