Speaking to reporters, Bangladesh Nuclear Energy Commissioner (BAEC) Mosharraf Hossain said that after decades of studying beaches, BAEC scientists have discovered eight precious metals (including Ilmenite, Zircon, Rutile, Magnetite, Leucoxene, Kyanite, Garnet and Monazite) are in sand with a reserve of 1.76 million tons.

Scientists have found 17 sand deposits containing 23% of precious metals with estimated reserves of 4.35 million tons. The above 8 precious metals are scattered in the area of nearly 8,000 ha in Co Bada district, Eastern Bangladesh.

According to Mosharraf, the metals are not yet exploited because the country is considering whether exploitation affects the value of tourism, biological diversity and the environment.

However, a report by a Bangladeshi Government committee recently said that metal could be exploited in some areas in accordance with the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
