Can produce 31 million tons of bio-oil from straw

Vietnam can produce 31 million tons of bio-oil per year from rice straw - one of the by-products of agricultural production is still largely abandoned by farmers after harvest.

>>>Japan has the technology to produce cheap fuel from straw

This is the conclusion published by the group of scientists from the Vietnam Petroleum Institute and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology at the recent conference of Science and Technology in Petroleum.

Picture 1 of Can produce 31 million tons of bio-oil from straw

According to the survey results of rapid pyrolysis of rice straw, in the condition of reaction temperature of 500 o C, gas flow of 6 liters / minute and the size of straw raw material below 2mm, the highest bio-oil yield is 52 76% / kl. Compared with the G-class liquid fuel biofuel quality standard for industrial incinerators in 2012, this straw-based bio-oil by the fast pyrolysis method meets the standard.

With the efficiency of bio-oil liquid recovery, the source of straw from Vietnam's agricultural production can produce 31 million tons of bio-oil per year to serve as an alternative fuel as well as to upgrade to produce gasoline and diesel oil production in the near future.

Along with rice straw, scientists also performed rapid pyrolysis of other agricultural by-products such as bagasse, corn cob, and rice husk and also obtained similarly satisfactory results.

According to scientists, agricultural production in Vietnam annually removes about 62 million tons of biomass (straw, bagasse, corn cobs). Therefore, rapid pyrolysis of biomass materials not only provides biological oil products, fuels and chemicals to replace traditional materials, but also contributes to environmental protection, limiting straw burning, bagasse causes air pollution, and creates haze after harvest of the current crop.
