Casually discovered treasures worth more than 200 billion in the kitchen of a French lady

A new Renaissance painting masterpiece was discovered in the kitchen of an elderly woman in a town near Paris, France .

The painting, thought to be the work of the famous Cimabue artist in the 13th century, is worth about 9.7 million US dollars (approximately 224 billion) according to estimates by art experts.

They say the work is currently owned by an old lady in the town of Compiegne in northern France, who hung it in the middle of the kitchen and the living room of her home.

The painting is believed to be part of a large series of Cimabue paintings dating from 1280, depicting eight scenes of the Passion and the Crucifixion of Jesus.

The other two scenes of the painting currently on display are the Virgin Mary, the Child God and the two Angels at the National Gallery in London, England, and the Lord's Punishment at the Frick Collection Art Museum in New York, USA.

The painting in the National Gallery, which had been lost for centuries, was only accidentally discovered by an English aristocrat while cleaning his ancestral altar in Suffolk. The work was later donated to the state in 2000.

The elderly owner of the painting in France initially thought it was just an old religious symbol, when she brought it to a local auction.

However, experiments using infrared light show that "there is no question that this painting was done by the same hand" by Cimabue like other works.

The work will appear at the Acteon auction center in Senlis, north of Paris, on October 27.
