For years, scientists have tried to find ways to restore vision to the initial state for eye patients. Thanks to the development technology, a number of achievements have been achieved such as the method of reversing the retinal degeneration process successfully or the invention of Bionic bioelectronics. In addition, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the therapy with human stem cells. And most recently, researchers from Fudan University and China University of Science and Technology have found a cure for blindness in gold and titanium.

Published in Nature Communications, the team said the method could successfully restore the eyesight of mice. Specifically, scientists replaced damaged receptors with artificial light-receiving parts made of titanium dioxide and gold nanowires.

In order to test the effectiveness of artificial receptors, the scientists transformed the stem cells of the mice into the experiment so that the receptors naturally degenerate. They then transplanted and carefully observed the reaction of mice when exposed to green, blue and ultraviolet light. At this point, the mouse pupil relaxes, confirming that the new optical receptors are active and responding to the shining light. After eight weeks of postoperative surgery, there were no mice showing negative or traumatic signs of incompatibility with the newly grafted organ.

Currently the results are very positive but still have not brought to researchers what they want to know. Because it is difficult to determine what the vision that mice get after transplanting. Furthermore, alternative organs are unlikely to fully recover the full visibility of the colors that natural eyes can see. Perhaps this is not a big concern for some visually impaired people because for them to see the light is already happy, but at the same time a sign that the team needs to do more to improve It is good to be able to apply to treat many other eye diseases such as pigment retinitis (RP) and erode the macula.

The US Eye Institute estimates that every 4,000 people worldwide will be affected by RP while many people age 60 and older are at high risk of eroding yellow spots, and if smoking is frequently at risk will double. It seems that the future is promising with the continuous development on the way to rediscover the light for people.
