China: successfully implanted spinal disc
Doctors in Hong Kong, China announced that they have successfully performed the world's first spinal implant surgeries for 5 patients.
These spinal discs were taken from 3 young patients who died suddenly from injury. They are donated to these surgeries with the consent of their relatives.

Removing damaged spinal discs and connecting adjacent vertebrae are considered ' standard ' treatments. However, this method leads to limiting movement and can accelerate degradation in other vertebrae. Artificial spinal discs can help overcome that weakness, but can cause serious complications in the neck area of patients.
So far the spinal disc implant has never been successfully performed in humans.
Surgeons said the successful implementation of these surgeries could pave the way for an alternative therapy for current therapies.
