Chinese officials resigned after the water poisoning
The director of China's Environmental Protection Agency Xie Zhenhua yesterday resigned from his position to take responsibility for the tainted river water that left millions of people without drinking water and making Russia-China relations tense. Mr. Xie was the first official to lose his job in this environmental disaster.
Tons of cancer-causing benzene flow into the Songhua River (northeastern China), causing millions of people to be dehydrated. The river of poisoning is flowing to Russia and is expected to arrive on 10 December.
Earlier, Xie 's deputy Wang Yuqing commented that local officials had caused China to lose its opportunity to prevent widespread water contamination. The explosion at a chemical plant in Jilin happened on November 13. But Beijing until November 17 was announced. He also commented that local leaders "secretly approved the dumping of pollutants into the river to pursue economic development."
More than two weeks after the disaster, the pollutant in the Tunghua River is still 21 times higher than the permitted level - Minister of Labor Safety Li Yizhong commented. ' Cities located on the Songhua River need to be on guard, ' he remarked.
Songhua River flows into the Heilongjiang River, named Amur in Russia. Khabarovsk, the largest city on the Amur River, intends to cut water for about 2 days if the poison level is considered dangerous.
