Chip 'understands' all activities of users
Intel has just introduced some interesting projects such as high-performance wireless LAN chips, new VoIP security methods, and especially a personal sensor device capable of analyzing human movements through Bluetooth.
Source: intel.com These ideas were presented by Intel experts during the "Intel Day" conference, which took place last week at the Santa Clara headquarters of the US chip maker. Although the research groups do not mention much until the time of product launch, those projects partly reflect Intel's ambition and the technology they are pursuing.
Smart sensor
An Intel team of scientists has demonstrated a system of 7 sensors with the ability to control human voice, movement and lighting, humidity conditions . in real time. This device is smaller than a business card and works via Bluetooth. Intel's Tanzeem Choudhury researcher said it could identify users standing or walking, silent or talking .
This system will be used to monitor the health of elderly people living alone, or to measure if someone has done enough exercise. Users can toggle the sensor off and decide which information will be sent and to whom.
High-performance Wi-Fi
Intel has integrated almost every component of the wireless LAN system, multi-antenna into one chip with a diagonal less than 10 mm. The chip uses CMOS technology (a metal oxide semiconductor), which is used to build high-speed and power-saving microprocessors.
The ability to receive and transmit multiple channels with separate antennas is a prominent feature of the new generation WLAN mechanism (being standardized in the IEEE 802.11n specification). Using multiple antennas will support wireless clients or workstations that can send data faster, farther and more reliable in most situations.
VoIP security
Another Intel team has applied virtualization technology to the Internet conversation protocol. Expert Michael Covington said they "isolated" VoIP from the risk of attack by breaking the system into multiple zones (domains) separately. For example, a computer may contain domains for office applications and another area for important software such as VoIP, so the likelihood of being infected with the virus is minimized. Virtualization also helps improve VoIP communications because it is not interfered with by other processes.
