The unusually warm weather and poor sanitary conditions caused the number of cockroaches to explode in a city in southern Italy in the past few days.

>>>What would life be without . cockroaches?

Large red cockroaches - insects with a body length of up to 7cm, appear throughout Naples in large numbers and health workers constantly spray cockroaches to underground sewers to prevent the growth of they, AFP reported.

The rapid increase in the number of cockroaches made people feel more pressing about the situation of waste - a searing problem in Naples in recent years.

Neapolitan people often throw garbage at night to collect sanitation workers early in the morning. Maurizio Scoppa, director of the city health agency, said that night garbage and hot weather provided the ideal conditions for cockroach proliferation.

'The problem of waste management and waste water drainage system are the causes of the current situation. The city government doesn't have enough manpower to check every sewer , 'he said.

Some medical experts warn of the risk of hepatitis A and typhoid due to the outbreak of cockroaches. However, Maria Bonaccisaid, a spokesman for the city council, dismissed their judgment.

'The outbreak of cockroaches does not create health hazards. The situation has not developed to an emergency, because this phenomenon only affects some areas. Other health experts claim it does not threaten people's health , 'Bonaccisaid said.

Bonacci said public opinion exaggerated the use of the term 'cockroach invasion' , but she admitted the number of cockroaches in the summer this year has skyrocketed compared to the previous summer. She said that they proliferate rapidly because previous officials did not clean up the sewers.

Red cockroach is a cockroach species originating from tropical climates around the world. They 'migrate' to other climates thanks to seagoing ships.
