Conflict between people and elephants, how to solve?
In order to resolve the conflict between elephants and humans, first change the way people think is 'coexist, coexist with elephants and wildlife' .
Elephants are very intelligent animals and have a good memory. In nature they live in very disciplined herds and have ' feelings ' together. Many stories are touched by scientists, residents living near the forest where elephants live and noted elephants.
(Photo: humanflowerproject) In nature elephants often live in vast, vast forests covering hundreds of thousands of square kilometers, far from residential areas. Their scope of operation is very wide, with a radius of hundreds of kilometers.
We have conducted many researches on gray cows in Yok Don area (now Yok Don National Park) and forest areas in Champassak province in the south of Laos.
These are vast dipterocarp forests which are also home to many elephants outside the wild. Places where elephants eat, often leave an area of trees that are broken, rotten and piles of their excreta that are several hectares in size.
Then they moved dozens of kilometers to new accommodation . A few years later the trees here restored to ensure their food source when returning. Their lives go on continuously like that.
But over the past several decades, many large forests that are inhabited by elephants have been not only devastated but also invaded, splitting the forest into small patches that do not have enough scope to function. moving and foraging made them go out of the forest looking for food in the fields that were originally forests.
It is the survival instinct of elephants as well as any animal! Not only that, poachers are always stalking to hunt for elephants with ivory leaving elephants with only elephants and baby elephants. That is the reason why many elephants are angry and there is a conflict between elephants and humans.
To deal with that conflict , people find ways to chase away elephants such as gongs, burning fire or shooting guns just to threaten them. But it seems that these measures are only temporary and quickly out of effect because the elephants have recognized them as just " jokes " to them!
In Tien Phong newspaper (No. 42, October 24, 2006), there is a post " People have the right to evict elephants "
He said that using a horn type with a high sound intensity (over 150 ben tips) with such a great sound intensity, animals in general and elephants in particular will startle themselves in panic. For the first time elephants hear this strange noise they can panic. But when the elephants found out that this was just a scare, they only realized a few times!
In my opinion, I want to resolve the conflict between elephants and humans, first to change the way people think is ' coexist, coexist with elephants and wildlife ', this must be done immediately from our generation, otherwise it will be too late.
Immediately stop the destruction and encroachment on forest areas where elephants live. But resolving the current conflict is only temporary. For elephants we cannot use strong mechanical measures but must be in real science.
At Stanford University, California (USA) studied elephant information exchange. Researchers who have used modern seismic devices to monitor African elephant activity in Namibia for 10 years have discovered that the official language of elephants are vibrations of different frequencies. Elephant legs were created on the ground.
These sounds can travel from 6 to 10 km depending on the terrain to transmit messages to each other in the herd. Scientists have placed seismic devices capable of producing vibrations in the ground just like the alarm signals created by elephants by beating their feet to the ground when elephants appear if they want to drive them away.
This is the main measure to expel elephants effectively, if we send people to train and equip specialized seismic equipment and apply them in our country.
