In the coming time, Labiofam will present the results to specialized agencies and if approved, this drug will be clinically tested on humans.

According to Castro, this is a compound that can penetrate the pathogens or necrotic cells. Previous types of cancer treatment compounds often inhibit the growth and destruction of disease-carrying cells but also destroy benign cells.

Test results show that this compound reacts well to breast, lung, brain and prostate cancer cells. Mr Castro said the new finding could also contribute to the treatment of a number of other diseases that the international scientific community is very interested in such as AIDS and diabetes.

Cuba's Ministry of Health said cancer accounts for 25% of deaths in the island nation, of which 59% of cancer patients are under 75 years of age.

In 2012, for the first time, cancer became the highest cause of death in Cuba, followed by cardiovascular diseases.
