Cure cancer with light

Electric light that can treat cancer is opening up new promising treatments in the future.

Nature Medicine has published a study by researchers in the US that light from electric lights is a 'medicine' promising against cancer. Treatment in this way can be achieved effectively and does not destroy surrounding tissue.

Currently, cancer treatment can be divided into three stages: radiotherapy, tumor surgery, tumors or using pharmaceuticals to destroy cancer cells. However, these methods leave behind side effects so scientists are trying to come up with more precise and less dangerous treatments.

Scientists at the National Cancer Institute of Maryland (a Mid-Atlantic state, located on the east coast of the United States) tested this method on mice. Specifically, they implanted tumors of skin cancer into mice. After that, inject the drug and expose it to infrared light.

In this study, they used an antibody to attack proteins on the surface of cancer cells. They then attached the chemical IR700 to the antibody, IR700 activated by infrared light and went deep into the skin for a few centimeters.

"The tumor size of mice using the treatment regimen was significantly reduced compared to mice that did not use this method. In addition, their lifetime was much longer," the researchers said. .

Scientists believe this method is promising for cancer diagnosis and treatment. However, this method has only been tested successfully in mice, so it is too early to confirm that it will succeed in treating human cancer.
