Cure 'disease' warms the earth
Two British scientists have come up with a solution to global warming: plug thousands of giant pipes into the ocean to speed up algae growth.
Imagine an ocean filled with giant tubes, pumping cool and nutrient-rich air from the depths, stimulating the algae in the water to expand and absorb carbonic in the atmosphere.
It was a controversial new idea by James Lovelock, a British freelance scientist and Chris Rapley, a cosmologist and director of the London Science Museum.
According to their calculations, they needed a beam of 10,000 to 100,000 tubes, each with a diameter of about 10 meters and a length of 100 meters. Wave energy will cause the tubes to stuff up and stuff. The unidirectional valves in the tube will force the water to rise only, carrying nutrients to the surface.
"Nutrients will help algae grow and absorb CO2 in the atmosphere," Lovelock believes.
Preliminary tests in a small water tank show that this solution has potential applications, at least on a small scale, Lovelock and Rapley said.
Both also claim that such mechanical solutions may be the only way to prevent global warming from going beyond control. However, other experts are still skeptical about this plan, and argue that it can emit more CO2 than it absorbs, while the marine ecosystem may be overturned.
The process of cooling the earth with giant tubes: 1- When the tubes go down, the 1-way valve opens, nutrient-rich cold water will flow up. 2- When the tube emerges, the valve closes, pushing this cold water onto the surface. 3- Cold water stimulates algae growth, absorbs CO2 in the atmosphere, helps to form clouds. 4- The clouds reflect the sun, preventing the heat from spreading to the surface of the earth.
