Detecting protein causes baldness in men

Scientists have identified proteins that cause hair loss. This finding may open up the prospect of developing a new drug that helps treat baldness effectively in men.

Scientists from Pennsylvania (USA) have analyzed the scalp samples of more than 20 men with baldness (AGA). The results showed that bald scalp had 3 times higher levels of PGD2 than hair scalp.

This finding also means that baldness can be treated by creating a drug that reduces the level of PGD2 protein in bald scalp so that hair can grow back.

Currently, there are 10 drugs that can disable the activity of PGD2 protein. From these drugs, scientists hope to develop a new bald remedy in the form of cream or oil.

Professor George Cotsarelis, head of the study, said: ' Our research can help develop a new treatment for baldness of AGA that is very common in men.'

Scientists plan to conduct further studies to find out whether PGD2 protein inhibitors work for women with baldness.
