Successfully cure baldness

Japanese scientists announced on April 18 that they had succeeded in 'planting' feathers for experimental mice by implanting hair follicles made from stem cells. Research opens hope for effective early treatment of baldness in humans.

Prof. Takashi Tsuji from Tokyo University of Science and biological engineers implanted hair follicles from stem cells into the skin of experimental mice. As a result, the hairs of these mice grow very well, even continuing to grow after their molting cycle.

In order for stem cells to turn into tissues or organs, they are usually taken from embryos. However, Professor Tsuji and colleagues developed hair follicles with mature skin cells.

"Our current study not only shows the ability to treat hair regeneration but also shows the potential to replace human organs with the patient's own adult stem cells ," Professor Takashi Tsuji added.

'We will begin clinical research within the next 3-5 years to bring about realistic treatments,' said Koh-ei Toyoshima, a researcher.
