Detecting rare leopards in Lam Dong

On January 9, Lam Dong Provincial Forest Protection Department said that it was possible to identify wild animals in the village 1, Da Oai commune (Da Huoai district, Lam Dong). is a rare and precious leopard species that needs protection.

From the information of the people, through field inspection in village 1, Da Oai commune, Lam Dong Provincial FPD have recorded many animal footprints with claws, different sized footprints (small ones with dimensions horizontal padding from 2-3cm, large type from 4.2-6.2cm).

In addition, when working with households in the area, forest rangers also received information that some people saw three wild animals at the evening of December 18, 2012.

In particular, two large individuals are about 80cm tall (one individual is injured in the leg) and a small individual is about 30cm high. These animals have a cat-like head, yellow fur and have black stripes. After being shown a control picture by forest rangers, the households realized that the above three animals were apricot newspapers.

With the results from the field and the information provided by the people, Lam Dong Provincial FPD have identified three animals that have appeared in Da Oai commune in recent times as apricot newspapers (scientific name is Panthera Pardus). This is an animal belonging to the family of cats, classified into Group I in the list of endangered, rare and precious animals, banned from exploitation and use for commercial purposes.

On that basis, Lam Dong Provincial Forest Protection Department requested Da Huoai Forest Protection Department to coordinate with local authorities to propagate and protect people and take measures to drive away animals to avoid possible dangers. At the same time, local forest rangers also need to strengthen forest patrolling and inspection to prevent illegal hunting and trapping.
