Detects large groundwater resources near the Sahara Desert
British scientists have discovered the largest reserve of groundwater in the area near the Sahara Desert while studying the most arid region in Africa.
>>>Africa lies on a giant underground water tank
They said the finding could reduce water shortages due to future climate change.
Sahara Desert
Scientists say that in some North African countries with large areas such as Libya, Algeria, Egypt and Sudan, the volume of groundwater is believed to be the largest. They estimate there are about 660,000 km 3 of groundwater reserves throughout Africa, 100 times more than the current surface water reserves are known.
Speaking in the British Journal of Environmental Research Letters, Dr. Alan Mc Donald, head of the research team, said, although groundwater reserves in the continent are large, not all of them can be used.
In addition, there are a number of large aquifers in Africa such as in the Sahara and surrounding areas, however they are very deep, about 100-250m above the ground.
The researchers said they based the existing geological map of the government and hundreds of aquifers research sketches to draw a map with the aim of helping experts assess the reality of pressure. Water force and water safety.
