Did Isaac Newton's lost letter reveal a shocking prediction about the End of the World?

In a letter written in 1704, the renowned English scientist Isaac Newton, the father of modern physics and astronomy, predicted that the world would end by 2060. 

Isaac Newton was a brilliant mathematician, physicist, and astronomer, widely recognized as one of the most influential scientists of all time. His book, *Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica* (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) , published in 1687, laid the foundation for the universal laws of motion and gravity, which are believed to have been inspired by an apple falling from a tree.

As a rationalist who received royal exemption from adhering to church doctrines, Newton nevertheless used a biblical passage as the basis for his predictions.

However, it seems Newton also had deep connections to religion, similar to those to science. Papers he left behind, rediscovered after years of being lost, first in a trunk at the Earl of Portsmouth's home in 1969, revealed Newton's prediction of the End of the World occurring 1,260 years after the founding of the Roman Empire.

In a letter written in 1704 and presented at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 2007, Isaac Newton used the Bible to calculate the end of the world. The note revealed a profound spiritual aspect of a man often considered purely rational. At the time, he confidently stated in papers that the Bible proved the world would end in 2060, adding: "It may end later, but I see no reason why it should end any sooner."

"I mention this not to assert the timing of the apocalypse, but to prevent the baseless, fantastical conjectures of those who routinely predict the end of the world ," Newton added. "They make sacred prophecies by being willing to lose their own credibility if reality proves otherwise."

According to him, the last days of the world will witness: "the destruction of wicked nations, the end of suffering and all troubles, the return of the Jews from their captivity and the establishment of a prosperous and eternal kingdom."

Yemima Ben-Menahem, one of the curators of the Isaac Newton exhibition, stated in 2007: "These documents show a scientist who was successful under religious devotion, because of his desire to see God's work in the world."

Hebrew University stated that this is the first time the letter has been publicly released since 1969.

Newton's work at Cambridge University in the late 17th century formed the foundation of modern science, until the discovery of relativity and quantum mechanics at the end of the last century.

But the renowned physicist was also interested in the superstitious beliefs of his time, issues long since detached from modern science. Newton spent four years in the 1670s preparing to conduct alchemy —an idea that could transform ordinary metals into gold.
