Oak trees living in marshes are often found in fields. This is one of the rarest timbers in the UK, with quality comparable to today's most expensive tropical hardwoods.

Experts say that the Norfolk oak tree has just been dug up is the oldest old oak ever found. The newly excavated stem section may only account for 1/4 of the original tree.

Giant oak trees have died out from about 7,000 years ago, when the sea level rises, causing the river to flood and flood the swamp.

Trees were standing dead and falling into swamps full of silt, so they were well preserved and some even came to this day.
