Discover the oldest seashell jewelry in Morocco
An international team of archaeologists has discovered the oldest African seashell jewelry dating back at least 82,000 years in a cave near Berkane (Morocco).
Researcher Abdeljalil Bouzouggar of the Morocco Institute of Archeology said jewelry is in the form of a lot of perforated shells. The team used 'four methods of dating ' to give the same result, ie about 82,500 years.
'The perforated seashells are vermilion different from the original colors painted by humans at the time. This is a sign of an art deco activity on the shells of soft-bodied animals on the Mediterranean coast , 'Mr. Bousouggar said.
The researchers recorded a worn out spot on most of the shells, indicating they were made of necklace.
The study was carried out by archaeologists in Morocco in collaboration with Oxford University (UK), Center for Scientific Research (France) and Anthropology Department at George Washington University (USA).
