Discovered a new orchid species in Vietnam

Phu Quoc National Park has just discovered two more orchids, one of which is the first orchid species recorded in Vietnam: Phyllis (Liparis cf. rhodochila Rolfe)

The first orchid species recorded in Vietnam originating from the Java archipelago and has not previously been recorded in Vietnam, while Kieu Lan Tongue Single (Calanthe lyrogolossa Reichenb .f.) is a relatively common species widely distributed in Vietnam, but this is the first time recorded in Phu Quoc.

Recent surveys were conducted in October 2007 by Phu Quoc National Park staff in conjunction with Wildlife At Risk (WAR).

During the last two years, on Phu Quoc Island, a considerable number of rare orchids, including two species of orchids that were not previously found in Vietnam, have been recorded, which are Phytoplankton, (Liparis cf. rhodochila) and Malaxis calophylla.

Once again, this finding demonstrates the abundance of plant resources of Phu Quoc Island, the ecological value of the National Park, and the importance of conservation of flora and fauna on the island before the development status yet. Inadequate control and management.

Plant experts are continuing to conduct orchid surveys and research on the island. The updated list of orchid species in Phu Quoc will be released at the end of the survey project in early 2008.
