Boats were found at Kalasasaya temple in a research, conservation and restoration project carried out with the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on the ancient city. , about 75km from the capital La Paz, near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca.

Archaeologist Mary Luz Choque of the Tihuanaco Archaeological Research Center, said the circle in which objects were buried shows that they were part of the funeral of a noble descendant.

Tiwanaka was a political and religious center considered one of the most important pre-Columbian empires. This ancient city was declared a religious heritage by UNESCO in 2000.

A team of four archaeologists and more than 50 researchers have been excavating at the site for 15 days and will continue to work for another six weeks before publishing the final report on their findings.

Julio Condori, director of the Center for Archeology, said the boats originated from the time of Tiwanaku III, circa 400 and 600 AD and had pictures of fish and birds.

The new findings allow people to redefine the true function of the Kalasasaya temple and reevaluate the explanation of its origin.
