Divorce after 115 years of marriage

The oldest marriage in the animal world ended after 115 years, when two turtles at an zoo in Austria refused to stay in the stable.

"We have a feeling they can't stand each other anymore," said Helga Happ, a zoo manager.

Bibi and Poldi turtles broke up after 115 years of marriage.

Two Bibi and Poldi tortoises were transferred from the Basel zoo in Switzerland to live happily together in Klagenfurt, Austria, 36 years ago. Both are 115 years old, they grew up together and eventually became a couple of turtles.

Zoo staff didn't know why they turned out to be such, but they said that recently the turtle Bibi often attacked her mates by biting her shell.

"Nobody knows the reason, but they don't seem to stand each other anymore," Australia's News page quoted Happ as saying.

The zookeeper noticed that something was wrong when Bibi turtle kept attacking and biting on the Poldi tortoise. He refused to stop until the Poldi turtle was transferred to another cage.

The separation of the turtle couple marks the end of the world's oldest animal "marriage".
